Het boek is de geschiedenis van Plath's overgevoeligheid en haar koortsachtige, nooit geheel tot rust gekomen talent. De hoofdfiguur, in een voor haar waanzinnige opwindende buitenwereld, heeft het gevoel onder een glazen stolp te leeven. Periodes waarin zij zich laat meedrijven met de gebeurtenissen wisselen af met periodes waarin de wil om gezond te worden en een greep op de dingen te krijgen de overhand hebben. De roman kan worden beschouwd als een poging van Plath om via de literatuur orde te scheppen in de chaos van haar steeds sneller naar een catastrofe ijlende leven. De glazen stolp is meer dan literatuur: het is een uniek getuigenis van een ontoegankelijke wereld.
