Despairing Voices is an anthology of urdu short stories translated into English. The stories are all modern in the sense that they present characters who are beset with the problem that though fast becoming a global village the world that they inhabit is cloistered and segregated into different groups on the basis of economic, social, geographical, and political disparities and differences. The stories are by famous Urdu writers from India and Pakistan, and are translated with intense thoughtfulness and and in clear lucid prose.
