The Metamorphoses is a narrative poem penned by the Roman poet Ovid. Widely considered to be his ultimate work, comprising fifteen books and over 250 myths. The poem portrays a history of the world from creation up to the deification of Julius Caesar. Metamorphoses is viewed as one of the most influential works in Western culture, inspiring authors such as Dante, Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Boccaccio. It has also inspired countless works of art from various artists throughout the centuries.

Mortimer, R. Italian 16th cent., 343

Library's c. 2 consists of the engraved t.p. and 15 ill. only, tipped onto leaves from: De jure civium, quam ... pro gradu doctoratus ... submittit Cornelius ab Heemskerck (Lugduni Batavorum : Apud Balduinum Vander Aa, 1747). The ill. for libro VI has been placed after that for libro VIIII. Mortimer notes that the ill. may have been issued separately with the t.p. but without the text.

Binding, c. 2: worn calf, gold tooled with central medallion within rectangular frame that has bunches of 3 acorns at the corners. Wider roll along edges of boards incorporates hunters and animals.

Library's c. 1 has signatures of Gio. Batta. Giangrandi at head and foot of t.p., the surnames of which have been scratched out. The initials B.M. have been written near top edge of t.p. engraving. The same initials appear on foredge and foot of textblock.
