Des premiers textes de 1916-1918 jusqu'à un poème écrit au soir de sa vie, en 1984, le premier conflit mondial oscille entre signification et absurdité, entre volonté et fatalité, entre solitude et fraternité. Ce livre confronte également l'oeuvre de Vivier à celles d'autres combattants, et souligne certains moments-clés de la littérature de guerre belge.
