A history of the Catholic Church in the Pacific Northwest, 1743-1983

This book is about the very early days in the early 1700s of the movement of the Roman Catholics to the Pacific Northwest and to the city of Seattle in northern Washington State. Originally the city of Seattle was called Nesqually whch appearsto be an Indian word. There is much informaton about the dealings between the American Indian tribes and the clergy. Biographies of many of the early Bishops of the era are highlighted in this history book. One Bishop in particular is my relative, Bishop Edward John O'Dea who became the first Catholic Bishop of Seattle, Washington and was also known as the third Bishop of Nesqually. Nesqually was the original name of the city and was changed to Seattle at that time. Bishop O'Dea initiated the construction of St. James Cathedral in Seattle and, before he died in 1932 on his fiftieth anniversary of ordination, he initiated O'Dea Catholic High School in Seattle. He was originally buried in Calvary Cemetery in Seattle and when the new Holyrood Cemetery was completed he was moved to the mausoleum at Holyrood where the Bishops are buried together. Edward John O'Dea was born 23 November 1856 in Boston, and died 25 December 1932 in Seattle. He was ordained on 23 December 1882 in Montreal, Canada; appointed 3rd Bishop of Nesqually-Seattle on 13 June 1896 and consecrated on 8 September 1896 in Vancouver, WA. All of this per his headstone for purposes of genealogy research.
