"The plates have been printed in oil colors, at the establishment of Mr. Charles H. Crosby, and the work done mainly by Mr. John O'Neil. This is the first attempt, we believe, to give a series of scientific plates executed in this manner; ..."--Editor's Preface.

Plates are lithographic drawings with the addition of colour wood-engraving.

MASS copy: Bound in dark brown rib-grain cloth blocked in gold and blind. With embossed stamp: "The Presbyterian Hospital Philadelphia Ludlow Library". With duplicate of page: "Description of Plate 8".
