Growing evanescent waves in continuous microstrip grids containing meandered lines.

A new type of 2-D backward-wave structure consisting of only continuous transmission lines will be proposed in this thesis. We call this structure a backward-wave transmission-line (BWTL) grid. A corresponding 2-D forward-wave transmission-line grid (FWTL) grid will also be proposed. It will be shown through a combination of simulation and ideal transmission-line theory that a FWTL/BWTL/FWTL sandwiched structure can be used to grow evanescent waves. A practical microstrip implementation of the sandwiched structure employing meandered lines will be designed using a combination of full-wave simulation and circuit simulation. It will be shown through simulation that conductor and dielectric losses deteriorate the performance of the grid. Finally experimental results will be presented from an experimental prototype that are in agreement with simulation.
