Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves – and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives – and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization, and helped make us who we are.

Edition Notes

Attributed to Thomas Paine in the Dictionary of American biography.

Parentheses subsitituted for square brackets enclosing "Price one British shilling."

In line 15 of title, the word "Added" is capitalized. In another state, the word "added" is not capitalized. Several other minor differences between the two states are recorded in: Gimbel, Richard. Thomas Paine: a bibliographical check list of Common sense, entries CS-14 and CS-15. Gimbel suggests that this edition may have been printed in Dublin, or perhaps London.
