Emmanuel Mounier

1905 - 1950

Brillant élève de Jacques Chevalier, agrégé de philosophie en 1927, Emmanuel Mounier publia La Pensée de Charles Péguy en collaboration avec Georges Izard (Plon, 1929). Il fonda la revue Esprit en 1932 et y signa un manifeste où la "révolution personnaliste et communautaire" qu’il prônait, s’opposait à la fois à l’individualisme libéral et au collectivisme d’État. Dès lors, sa vie, sa carrière et son œuvre sont confondues avec l’existence de la revue. Après l’interdiction de la revue en 1941, Mounier passa dans la clandestinité. Il écrivit L’Affrontement chrétien, publié en 1945, et Le Traité du caractère, publié en 1946. Dès la Libération, la revue s’inscrivit au cœur des problématiques de la reconstruction ; Mounier révisa ses positions anticommunistes et accompagna même un temps les positions du Parti. Sur le plan philosophique, Emmanuel Mounier revendiqua le personnalisme comme l’une des voies de l’existentialisme chrétien au travers de l’Introduction aux existentialismes (1947). Il mourut en 1950.
