Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt-Wilson was born in Apley Hall, Shropshire, the son of a naval officer descended from King Edward III of England. At the age of nine years, he was sent to a boarding school in Cheam, where he had a brief affair with an older student. After prep school he attended Eton College. He was an eccentric but talented musician and writer, and was well-known in British literary circles in the 1920s and 1930s. From 1939-1945 he lived in Rome, then returned to live in England until his death.
