Ullein-Reviczky, Antal

8 November 1894 (Sopron, Hungary)Sopron, Hungary) - 1955 (London)

Dr.Antal Ullein-Reviczky: distinguished jurist, brilliant diplomat, fluent in five languages, a Hungarian patriot whose loyalty is beyond question and, finally, a man of good faith. After finishing his studies in Vienna at the Diplomatic Academy, he entered the Hungarian foreign service in 1919. By the Sopron plebiscite (December 1921), thanks to the efforts of the young Ullein-Reviczky, this town from which he himself originated, was given back to Hungary, in spite of forceful counter-propaganda of the Austrians. Named Secretary of the Hungarian Legation in Paris, Ullein-Reviczky participated as well in the work of the Societé des Nations. He was decorated with the "Légion d'honneur" in 1929, the first of many decorations. Dispatched to Turkey from 1929 to 1935, he was sent as consul to Zagreb from 1935 to 1938 which was, for a Hungarian during this period, no sinecure. Ullein-Reviczky had the privilege of pursuing his academic career in parallel with his functions as a diplomat. He published widely in his country and abroad, including many studies concerning International and Hungarian constitutional law.

The war would lead Ullein-Reviczky into the realm of active politics. He became the right-hand of Prime Minister Miklós Kállay, and the enemy of the Nazis. In 1943 the Prime Minister sent Ullein-Reviczky to Stockholm, charging him in his capacity as Minister to bring to a successful conclusion the negotiations begun with the Allies in early 1943 aimed at withdrawing Hungary from the war. In recent years Ullein-Reviczky's close connection to Raoul Wallenberg has come to light.

His celebrated work was devoted to "La Nature Juridique des Clauses Territoriales du Traité de Trianon" (Paris, 1929 and 1936). In his famous work, "Guerre allemande - paix russe", published in Switzerland in 1947, and translated into Hungarian, " Német haboru - orosz béke", published in Budapest in 1993, Ullein-Reviczky relates these dramatic events in detail. This volume, "German War - Russian Peace" is now published, for the first time, in a new, authentic, English translation by Antal Ullein-Reviczky's only child, Lovice Mária Ullein-Reviczky, and is supplemented with a number of textual and visual documents from the Minister's personal papers which miraculously survived World War 11, the book launch was held at the Hungarian Embassy London in October 2014. Antal Ullein-Reviczky and the English language publication of his exciting book shall be a great inspiration for all those who struggle for freedom and human dignity.

In 1993 Ullein-Reviczky Antal's memory was honoured in a two day festival in Budapest with President Árpád Göncz, Prime Minister Jozséf Antall, Foreign Minister Géza Jeszenszky, Minister of Culture Ferenc Mádl and members of the Government, Diplomatic Corps and guests from all over the world.

The ANTAL ULLEIN-REVICZKY FOUNDATION (established 1993) is located in a "kastély" on an estate in NE Hungary owned and managed by Lovice Mária Ullein-Reviczky, an addition to the estate is the "Sancta Maria Auxilium Christianorum" Chapel consecrated by the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Dr. Juliusz Janusz in September 2010, the Chapel is dedicated to the memory of Antal Ullein-Reviczky and his English born wife, Lovice Louisa Grace Cumberbatch, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI honoured Lovice Mária Ullein-Reviczky with the Pontifical Order of Pope St. Sylvester. In 2012 The President of Hungary, Dr. János Áder, honoured Lovice Mária Ullein-Reviczky with the Order of Merit, the highest State Order of Hungary and in 2014 with the Officer's Cross.

The Foundation dedicates itself to maintaining the positive moral values of Antal Ullein-Reviczky, who in difficult times defended the inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled as a human being. For the past two decades the URA Foundation has organized by invitation only forums with leading national and international representatives in the fields of politics, diplomacy, economy, culture, science, sport and religion. The forums are followed by a concert and gala luncheon in the best Hungarian tradition. In the words of one of our guests: "The Ullein-Reviczky Antal Foundation creates exactly the atmosphere that participants need and want and can only find at Kelecsény".
