A native of Chattanooga, Hubert Shuptrine was born March 21, 1936. He graduated from the University of Chattanooga in 1959 with a Bachelor's degree in fine arts painting. While still a student at the University, he earned early recognition for his semi-abstract paintings, winning numerous regional and national competitive exhibitions.
In 1958, Shuptrine married Phyllis Wright and they left for Fort Lee, VA., where he served two years as an officer in the US Army Quartermaster Corps. Several jobs in the visual arts industry followed before he became a full-time arts painter in 1968.
