Charlotte Eliza Lawson Cowan (1832-1906), que ha pasado a la historia de la literatura con el nombre de su marido, James H. Riddell, nació en Carrickfergus, en el condado irlandés de Antrim, y a los quince años escribió su primera novela, The Moors and the Fens, en medio de una existencia invadida por la desgracia. Además de escribir una serie numerosa de novelas que tuvieron una gran acogida en su época, fue propietaria y editora del St. James Magazine. En la actualidad es más conocida por sus historias de terror y misterio y toda antología que se precie suele incluir un relato de la Riddell. La casa deshabitada es una de las mejores y más elegantes historias de misterio de la época victoriana.
