NOTE: This 1995 paperback (and ebook) Edition from Baen ends with Heinlein's original submitted Postlude of the story (page 199), which was refused by his editor at Putnam in 1962. The Appendix (page 207) includes the less grim version of the Postlude included in the published book in 1963 (page 209), and then goes on with a contest discussion by Jim Baen, a 1962 letter from Heinlein, contest-winning essays for or against the unpublished ending, and a suggested ending by Jim Baen. BACKGROUND: Heinlein's editor at Putnam did not approve his ending, deeming it too grim for young readers, and required him to change it. So the Putnam ending added some more text.

Work Description
Written for the juvenile mid-20th century sci-fi market, the story focuses on relationships between family members, friends, and enemies. Podkayne, a human girl born on Mars, has the opportunity to travel to Terra with her Uncle and her younger brother. She learns about good and evil, trust and betrayal, and, of course, about herself.
