A full-colour book with many photos by the author, describing the flora, fauna, ecology, and resource use of temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest of North America (states of OR, WA, AK; plus BC, Canada). Written for ages 12+, it explains the need for better management of these threatened forest communities as a whole, not as isolated parks or valleys.

Excerpts

The best method of clear-cutting is to scatter the cut sections, called "blocks" over a wide area. As these areas re-grow, a forest of different ages and species is created. This is better than scalping a whole valley or mountain, which is ecologically disastrous. Clear-cutting is a problem throughout the Northwest. In British Columbia, however, so many areas are being clear-cut that less and less virgin rainforest is left between the blocks. Not only is there an increasing number of clear-cuts, but the areas are huge.
