The republic of Turkey is the central successor state of the multinational, or rather multiconfessional, Ottoman Empire, which, at the time of its maximum expansion in the sixteenth century, stretched from the gates of Vienna to the India Ocean and from the steppes of southern Russia to the Sahara desert.
