Though sometimes ascribed to John Byron, it has also been attributed to Charles Clerke who was made midshipman of the Dolphin in 1761. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography.
A French edition printed in Paris in the same year under title "Voyage autour du monde, fait en 1764 & 1765, sur le vaisseau de guerre anglois le Dauphin, commandé par le chef-d'escadre Byron" has been ascribed to Jean Baptiste Antoine Suard by Barbier.
