1942: Thousands of British and American soldiers are launched on Operation Torch, to sweep out the Axis forces from occupied North Africa and pave the way for Europe's liberation. Englishman Will Walker, an ambitious officer rueing broken dreams of an SOE career and frustrated by his assignation to Field Security Services, is determined to assert his fragile authority at almost any cost. Meanwhile, quiet and thoughtful Ray Marfione, Italian-American infantryman of the US Army, fights grimly on under his own personal shadow: convinced his death is imminent, and conscious of his innocence being further eroded each day. As both men stand poised for the invasion of Sicily, they have no notion that this next campaign will result in their fortunes becoming entwined with that of a notorious mafioso ...

Work Description

"Set in North Africa and Sicily at the end of World War II, 'In the Wolf's Mouth' follows the Allies' botched 'liberation' attempts as they chased the Nazis north toward the Italian mainland. Focusing on the experiences of two young soldiers--Will Walker, an English field security officer, ambitious to master and shape events; and Ray Marfione, a wide-eyed Italian American infantryman--the novel contains some of the best battle writing of the past fifty years. The book also explores the continuity of organized crime in Sicily through the eyes of two men--Angilu, a young shepherd; and Ciro Albanese, a local Mafioso. These men appear in the prologue and in the book's terrifying final chapters, making it evident that the Mafia were there before and are there still, the slaughter of war only a temporary distraction."--

Two young soldiers-- Will Walker, an English field security officer, ambitious to master and shape events; and Ray Marfione, a wide-eyed Italian American infantryman-- follow the Allies' botched "liberation" attempts as they chase the Nazis north toward the Italian mainland. Meanwhile for Angilù, a young shepherd; and Cirò Albanese, a local Mafioso, the slaughter of war is only a temporary distraction. All four are both predator and prey, caught in the blundering inaccuracies of war.
