The "Appendix" was bought from the Earl of Ashburnham in May 1897 by Henry Yates Thompson, who added about a fifth of the manuscripts to his own collection, and offered the others to the public in two sales (the portion here catalogued, and another portion of 19 lots May 11, 1901).
