Title from wrapper covers.

Responsibility and date taken from Kitton, Frederic G. Dickens and his illustrators, 1972.

Parts were issued monthly in pale pink paper wrappers printed in black. Upper wrappers printed with title and elaborate illustrated border design, with signature: "Williamson, Sc.", and imprint: "Vizetelly and Co. 135 Fleet Street.". Lower wrappers printed with publisher's advertisement.

Each part consists of 4 wood-engraved portrait plates of the principle characters from Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens. Plates are with title captions. All are unsigned.

Plates were "republished by Edward Lacy in 'The scrap book of literary varieties', the names of the characters being changed into brief descriptive titles, such as 'Minature painter' instead of 'Miss La Creevy.'". Cf. Kitton. See McLean O 0432.8.

Part I includes publisher's advertisements on p. [1-4] bound at beginning, with imprint: "Vizetelly & Co. Printers, 135 Fleet Street.". P. [4] is advertisement including wood-engraved illustration: " ... This Day is Published, No. I. Price Sixpence, (to be continued Monthly) of Heads from Nicholas Nickleby, Etched by A. Drypoint from Drawings by Miss La Creevy ... ".

Part I includes advertisement for "Morison's Medicines" on p. [1-2] at end, with imprint: "London: Printed by G. Taylor, 7, Little James Street.".

Part I includes advertisement for "White's Essence of Eglantine." on p. [3] at end, with imprint: "Shaw & Sons, Engravers, Printers, &c. 137 and 138, Fetter Lane, London.".

Part VI includes publisher's advertisement on p. [1-2] at end accompanied by a fifth wood-engraved plate: "Specimen of the illustrations of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist.". Plate is with title caption and signature: "T. Onwhyn del".

MASS copy: Bound with original paper wrappers in olive green morocco blocked in gold. Board edges and turn-ins blocked in gold. With maroon endpapers. With bookplate: "johannis neville cross ex libris". With ownership label: "J. Steele, Coldstream Guards.".
