George Bernard Shaw wrote more than fifty plays and continually revised many of them. This revised Norton Critical Edition represents a cross-section of Shaw's most important theater work: Mrs Warren's Profession, Man and Superman, Major Barbara, and Pygmalion. The texts of the plays are based on early Constable editions, and each is accompanied by explanatory annotation. "Contexts and Criticism," which is completely revised in this Second Edition, presents material on the author and his work, from traditional critical readings to more theorized approaches involving Shaw's Fabianism and his alleged feminism. Contribu- tors include Leon Hugo, Nicholas Grene, T. F. Evans, Sally Peters, Jean Reynolds, Tracy C. Davis, G. K. Chesterton, John A. Bertolini, Margery Morgan, Stanley Weintraub, J. Ellen Gainor, and Errol Durbach.

A Chronology and a Selected Bibliography are also included.

ABOUT THE SERIES: Each Norton Critical Edition includes an authori- tative text, contextual and source materials, and a wide range of inter- pretations—from contemporary perspectives to the most current criti- cal theory—as well as a bibliography and, in most cases, a chronology of the author's life and work.
