Edition Notes

The original publication date, as issued in 1843, remains, but there are printed testimonials in this edition that date from as late as 1850.

This facsimile of the original 1777 publication was issued in Boston, ca. 1843. For variations between the many different editions of this facsimile, see George Parker Winship's "Notes on a reprint of the New England primer improved, for the year 1777", Cambridge [1922] in which are described 13 editions or issues.

Winship, G.P. New England primer, p. [15]

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) copies have the peculiarities of arrangement, dates, etc., ascribed by Winship to the 11th edition. Copy 1 is quarterbound in early goatskin with gray paper over original wooden boards. A bookplate on the front pastedown reads: Bought with the Charlotte Harris Fund. An inscription on the front flyleaf recto reads: Charles Deane, Esq., from his friend George Livermore, Feb. 10th, 1851 ..." Copy 2 is bound in blue library cloth over the original boards. It has a bookplate on the upper pastedown from the Brookline Public Library that reads: Presented by Miss. A.W. Deane, June 28, 1879. A bookplate from the Boston Public Library is affixed to the lower pastedown
