The Skin Horse
by Margery Williams Bianco; illustrated by Pamela Bianco.
George H. Doran Company
Written in English.
This copy is bound in printed paper over boards with a paper spine. It has no date on the title page, and has the GHD colophon on the copyright page beneath the copyright information. It also has a -C- on the lower part of the copyright page. Some assume that this is a marking of the printing of the book, but it is not. This is some type of in house marking by the publisher that had some meaning to them, perhaps marking the book as a children's book. I have another copy with the identical text (with colophon and -C-) that is bound in a cream cloth with the printed paper pasted to the front and rear boards. The cloth spine is blank unlike the paper spine on the other copy which has the title near the top and a hexagon shape with the GHD inside near the bottom of the spine. I am not sure, put I would guess the cloth binding was aimed at the library market. The cloth binding still has the pictorial end pages and does not appear to be a rebind. The book has 5 color plates at frontispiece and facing pages 12, 18, 38, and (42), plus many black and white illustrations. As the publisher merged with Doubleday on December 30, 1927 I wonder if more than one printing was done under the Doran imprint. I have not seen a large number of copies of this title with the Doran imprint, but all I have seen were First Editions.
