About the Book
Forbidden Images is a set of 47 pictures that are assembled, for the most part, from assignments Baughman has undertaken as a newspaper photographer during 1976... The final section of the book, "Forgotten Souls," has been drawn from a larger work that Baughman completed in 1974 entitled Retarded Lives. It is a documentary film dealing with the quality of life in Ohio's state and private mental institutions that was commissioned by the special education department of Kent State University. The theme of Forbidden Images is intended to be a visual reply to Baughman's previous book, Graven Images, a study in conformity stereotypes.
